The name ruby comes from ruber, Latin for red. This colour is due to the presence of chromium in the mineral which separates it from the other species of corundum such as sapphire. A lab grown ruby is a gemstone that is created in a laboratory instead of one formed naturally within the earth. These gemstones, although man made, have the same chemical, visual and physical properties as mined ruby.
